Bilstein Baja 1000 Update - 12:30pm Saturday Update
Ensenada, Baja California - With only about 25% of the field of four wheeled vehicles across the finish line, the day is beginning to drag a little bit. Untold hours of preparation and weeks of anxious anticipation have once again culminated in a spectacular event. The 38th SCORE Tecate Baja 1000 is slowly working its way into the record books.
Bilstein Baja 1000 Update - 10:30am Saturday Update
Ensenada, Baja California - Teams are still scrambling all over the desert, trying to beat the clock or simply picking up the pieces. And they're dropping like flies with nearly 100 teams on the dreaded "DNF" list. Checkpoint 5 (Rancho Buena Vista RM 485.9) is set to close at 1100hrs. Currently on Weatherman's channel, Checkpoint 5 is trying to help figure out who might still be somewhere out there in the desert.
Bilstein Baja 1000 Update - 7:30am Saturday Update
Ensenada, Baja California - The awesome sunrise show is behind us. As the sun rises higher in the sky, so do the temperature and the total number of vehicles who've joined the "OUT" list. #1407 - Dan Meyers - has succumbed with steering issues, #1607 - Max Theriot - has pulled the plug after blowing a motor at RM270, #553 - Ruben Garcia - is stranded at RM116 still awating for his chase crew to get unstuck and come retrieve him and countless others have timed out as Checkpoint 3 (Chanate Exit RM 335.7) closed at 0600hrs.
Bilstein Baja 1000 Update - 5:00am Saturday Update
Ensenada, Baja California - It's still a long night for a lot of folks here in the deserts and mountains of Baja California. With temperatures in the low 40's, and add to that the high winds and it makes it pretty unbearable! There's only been 14 finishers as of this update, leaving the rest of the record number of starters still "out there" somewhere. The lucky ones are back in Ensenada and have already crossed the finish line at the stadium. For the rest of the folks still out here, the radios have been crackling away steadily with reports varying widely between success and of those not so fortunate. You hear calls going out all night long to the likes of Weatherman and BFG Relay looking for status checks at rates up to 6 per minute! Not too sure how they do this for the endless hours they stay awake helping the masses! Is it something in the cactus?
Bilstein Baja 1000 Update - 4:00am Saturday Update
Ensenada, Baja California - The brutal race course continues to take its toll on the race vehicles. The "OUT" list is growing by the hour...currently there are over 30 vehicles on that list. Most recently, a punctured fuel tank earned #500 - George Seeley, Jr - a spot on that list. Earlier in the day it was blown engines for #17 - Carl Renezeder and #127 - Danny Anderson just to name a few. Currently #27 - Matt Scaroni - is finishing up a transmission swap at RM660 and about ready to get underway again with high hopes of staying off that dreaded "OUT" list.
Bilstein Baja 1000 Update - 2:00am Saturday Update
Ensenada, Baja California - BFGoodrich Tires has just clinched their 20th win of the Baja 1000. #105 - Larry Roessler - the Herbst buggy is across the finish line. Imagine the excitement in the BFG camp as they also grabbed the top finish in the Trophy Truck class with #82 - Bob Sheperd. Can you all say "Yeeee Haaaaw!"
